It's time for a new water pump when...

...you start to see some evidence of moisture around the weep hole? Not a drip (yet) but I'm looking at the bottom of the w/p and there definitely is a small area around the weep hole that looks like it has been wet. Nothing dripping, pooling on the ground or puddle on the drive belt (underneath). But I guess this is an indication that the pump is going? Is it recommended to change or is this something that is the norm and can hold off on doing for now? It's on a bone stock 96 BBB with 123k on the odo. This is the second w/p (AC Delco brand).

I did 4 WP 81K miles the one on now is not weeping.. its a crap shoot...

if you have a stain around the weep hole that is normal .. before starting cold place finger on the weep hole .. you will feel the hole..

also if it does a little weep the drain hose trick works for me .. when it leaks I will see a coolant stain on pavement not the opti ....
put that hose on @20k miles vehicle still under warranty .. dealership says it weeps .. I said that is B/S !

It's time for a new water pump when...

When I do decide to replace, do I go with the $200+ AC Delco unit or are there aftermarket products that are reliable replacements?

ac delco parts for these vehicles may not be ac delco like 20yrs ago..
I purchased a ac delco belt tension-er 2 yrs ago .. 4K miles it failed caused binding made loud noise on a cold start .. put in a after market back up no loud noise.

I would install the hose .. easy to see if it leaks and if it does no worry .. when you have parts/time/weather good change it.. if no hose panic mode ..cheap insurance..

I'm a little unclear as to the "hose" trick. Can you explain? Are you inserting a small diameter hose into the weep hole and then running it off to the side so that if there is any leak, the coolant doesn't go onto the Opti? What diameter hose would this be?

Just going on-line to the Parts Geek website, I see other manufacturers such as Bosch, Gates, GMB, Airtex, A1 Cardone,....then there's the other brands available through parts stores such as Autozone, O'Reilly and CARQUEST.

They're mostly all same brand, just in a different box.
I'd venture a guess probably only 1,2 or 3 manufacturers.
Do the hose trick, unless it's peeing a little evidence of water staining isn't anything to worry about IMHO.

The last few ACDelco parts I've bought were cheap offshore junk, just like everything else offered. Certainly NOT worth the additional cost I paid.
Some of the parts went back, because they were very lacking in quality.

4DOOR, Just a little to let you know. Even though I don't have an opti. I would do this if I did. As usual your detailed description and pictures always help. I got to look at your oil cooler and trans line cooler again. Materials are in my room for these mods. Kudos

yes I used a plastic vac barbed fitting stuck in weep hole connected to a vacuum rubber line then set off to the side.. don't need a big hole because it does not blow out lots of coolant just drips .. but the drips can and do get sucked into the opti as the opti with leaks/old has slight vacuum in it with the venting ..I put sealant around the fitting and weep hole surface for security..

I have yet to find a perfect opti with no leaks...so you do not want to have this weep hole drip on it ..

I did get some coolant in my opti what happened was to me and another member the rear WP seal just blew out .. I guess it was not properly seated .. aluminum reaction to the steel ..
