Factory CD player erroneously detects a CD

Hey, tried searching, couldn't find a lot of result.

The car has its OEM CD player, which works correctly most, but not all of the time. Sometimes the CD player will think it detects a CD and the mechanism can be heard (presumably) attempting to mount the CD on the spindle, but after awhile it finally errors out with "Err" on the display. Power-cycling it clears the error and all functions work properly.

I haven't done anything to the unit besides play a few discs and listen to the radio. I'm hoping that it's just some old grease causing a sensor to stick, any suggestions? I do have a couple of aftermarket stereos that I could swap in, but I'd need to order harness cable adapters if I did so.
