Red face

I saw somw Cerwin-Vegas on sale at blockbuster and I've been itching to upgrade the stock crappy speakers since I bought the car....so I got the 6X9s for the rear and this component 4X6 setup (a little 4" woof and a separate tweeter on a plate) for the front.

Now, I'm not exactly an audio newbie when it comes to home stereo and HT sound, but I'm a total novice at car audio. The kid in the store told me to ask the guy at the installation area for bass blockers to protect the front speakers.

I noticed that he gave me blockers that were rated from 0 to 300 Hz...and while again...I don't know ANYTHING about car audio...it seemed like a lot...even though it's only a 4 inch woofer...I would think a 100 or 150 Hz cutoff would have been enough...right?

So I rip everything apart, get some sound-proofing in the doors, take out the even-more-crappy-than-I-thought stock front speakers, and put everything back together to hear...CRAP coming from the front speakers...rears sound MUCH better than before and totally overpower the fronts.

Is this the fault of the stock head unit or the stupid bass blockers? (They were installed in the positive line, as per the instuctions on the package) Everything was soldered together. I'd hate to have to take the freaking door panels off again to remove the stupid bass blockers....

Thanks for any insight

If you have the Bose setup, then it already compensates for the frequencies. Just remove the bass blockers and gradually tune up the radio to your listening level. Listen for strain while bass is being played.

95 SS has no Bose setup. It's just the Delco head unit and the speakers.

Vy the way...not Blockbuster...Best Buy....jeez I have got to stop hitting the krippy before posting!

My 95 has the Delco radio also. It does comensate for the frequencies. I would do what I recommended above. Also those cheap blockers add resistance to the line and can make the speaker sound harsh. Try it and see what happens, just turn down the volume before listening.

Thanks Twig! I'll try it this weekend. I was trying to avoid taking the stupid door panels off again, but I guess there's no other way to do it.

I will report results.
