The Factory CD player in the SS has stopped working so I guess it's time to upgrade.
I need help... the last stereo I bought had knobs on it!

I would like to get a stereo/CD player and possibly go ahead and upgrade front and rear speakers. Might be nice if it would match my Pontiac Orange Bulbs in the dash too??

I don't know much about this stuff and have spent too much time working around jet engines and race cars to get too carried away. I'm thinking something in the $500.00 range. Any recomendations would be appreciated. I would like to do this before

I know its not the apsoult most best deck but the Nakamichi 45 over at has orange lighting, it sounds very good but its got a couple issues

new speakers? sure trouble is you'll want an amp for them..... if you get good front ones and an amp and put them in the kick panels and aim them well you won't even need rear ones really

Another good head unit is the Alpine CDA-D857. SBH Corp has it for $360.00 (; I haven't ordered from them personally but I've read good reviews about them. When I get the $$ together that's the unit I'm going to get.

The nice thing about the CDA-D857 is that it is a 1.5 Din unit; it fills the hole in the dash completely.

While the unit does have an onboard amp, I'd recommend using an external amp; the amps built into head units are not very good.

I've had good luck with Pioneer products, espacialy their Premier series. As far a speakers go, go to some shops and listen. Your ears will tell you which ones you like.

I'm going with Craig, I have been using a Pioneer/Premier P1R and it is by far the best unit I've ever had

Go to and you can search by vehicle for all kinds of audio/video equipment. They seem reasonably priced as well.

Crutchfield's a good source of information, but you can generally do much better than their prices at other sites. Once you identify a piece of equipment you want, try just doing an internet search for it and see what you come up with. As an example, I got a Pioneer (DEHP77? -- something like that anyway, it's still sitting in my basement waiting for me to do the install) for about $205 or so from, versus about $260 or $270, if I remember correctly, from Crutchfield. Whatever the difference was, it was pretty big and I made out much better. I can't remember the names of any other specific sites at the moment, but others might chime in.
