Im a complete noob when it comes to good sound systems in cars. All Ive ever had is stock crap or no radio at all.

Id like to have something decent, not alot of bass, but I would like to be able to hit a few bass notes on occasion. I figure I need 2 6x9's and 2 6.5's, a head unit and maybe a small amp. I would like to keep the price at or below 4-500 bucks.

Initially I was looking at sony explodes they sell at walmart but Im not too sure if they are one of the better bangs for the buck.

I was figureing about 150 for a deck, 100-150 for 6x9's, 50-100 for 6.5's. I would only really add an amp if the deck cant keep up with the speakers, I havent even looked at small amp prices so I dont even know.

I'll also be adding sound deadener, cause I dont like a bunch of road noise.

I need some direction, good name brands, etc. I listen to all types of music if that has any bearing.

After selling stereo stuff for years you get what you pay for. Personally I prefer Memphis Car Audio or JL. I have used both on countless cars of mine and others and loved it. I am doing a demo with Memphis right now WOOT WOOT. I hope this helps. Just stay away from stereo stuff that is a "good" deal because it probably is not.

I disagree

First I would recommend a GOOD head unit. Ive liked the Pioneer Premier top end models for some time now. I think $350 on ebay can get you a great deck. Ive found that it has made my stock 96 speakers sound good to my liking for now, so that I am able to spend more on subs/amp.

But if you dont want subs, then just get 6.5" with tweeters and run those inside. And a 100x4 amp that could cost you $200 for a nice used one.
Ive got a older Power Acoustik Sapphire that has never done me wrong. Not the best, but I enjoy it.

For 500 you should be able to get it done the most expensive thing is either going to be the deck or the amp. The deck you should go at least mid range on them. The pioneer, sony etc.. Don't go cheap but you dont have to buy the one with everything.
Around 150 and up depends on what ya go with.

The speakers are going to be a toss up because everyone has heard this and that and will tell you this is better then that so on and so forth. I LOVE MEMPHIS the pr series is a great buy the mclass is the SH%T. Now at the shop i work at we also sell a brand called quantum the cozmik or q series and they sound great also.
About $80 and up for a set

Okay and for the amp I would always suggest that you listen to it first without an amp to see how you like it. If it is not loud enough i would def put an amp on your speakers because you will get the most out of them.
About $120 and up for an amp

Hope something helps.

if your pn a budget T.M.A. (total mobile audio) is a nice brand......they are made by JL with the same qaulity only without the extra price tag of the JL name

my brother just install a componet set, 6x9s and a 4 channel amp all T.M.A. in his 96 roadmaster sedan and it all sounds great I'm bout to do the exact same setup in my wagon

Don't go cheap on the head unit. The speakers and amps are a toss up on cheapness because you can get a set of speakers and an amp (brand name or not brand name) for less than nothing on several internet websites that sell a lot cheaper than the retail stores and car audio shops.

IMO, yes.

But I'm a different breed than most when it comes to audio.
