Anyone fooled around with gutting an Onstar system from another GM platform and putting it in an b-body?

According to the owners manual in my Dad's pontiac Montana van, the onstar systems are locked to the vin number of the car and can't be swapped to a different car.
The problem is that the onstar is wired to everything including the air bag, door locks, radio and there is some kind of Gps unit because they can tell where you are.
I guess you could try and fool the unit and the people runing it into thinking that you have the junkyard car and just keep the vin number with you.

Well, I bought a Onstar kit online thats designed to be installed in a Blazer. As an upgrade at the dealer. Although when you activate a unit, it calls the Onstar service center and you have to provide the VIN, I think that the unit could be reinitialized with a new car/VIN if the center doing the install is a GM authorized Onstar dealer.

Well, it uses the UART signal from the SIR system (pin 9) to tell if the SIR system deploys, and the unit itself plugs into the back of the radio where the remote CD/Changer would go, then the CD/Changer plugs into a pass-thru. Its actually a simple harness all things considered, I was just curious if there were any pitfalls like it requiring some sort of unusual information like the newer overhead consoles do.

Whats wierd is that this kit has no provisions for remote unlock.

Update:

Kit worked great, needed to extend everything to mount the kit in the trunk, so I got to solder about 8 extra feet onto 15 wires or so. Need to use a 1997+ head unit too.

Fired right up on the first try.

She's got a great voice (whomever she is):

"Connecting to. . Onstar®"

For those of you who are looking into this and have an aftermarket headunit, Navone Engineering makes adapters. Navone is very well known for high quality adapters.

Adapters for what? I looked at their web site and the adapters they sell won't solve the problem of interfacing an aftermarket HU to the onstar system. The Onstar system sends a music only mute signal to the radio thru the Entertainment and Convience bus (C14, the old steering wheel control pin) to mute the music but still allow full volume for the Onstar® call, since it uses the stereo as a speaker phone. I don't understand how Navone Engineering can help with that issue.
