WTB Performance rebuilt 4l60E 1996

Seems as if my transmission is giving up. Have the no 2-3 shift at WOT. From reading around seems pretty universal this is related to a 3-4 clutch pack. Luckily this is not a daily driver so I am in no hurry and it gets around fine at normal driving.

Anyone have something sitting around no being put to use and interested in shipping to me? Let me know what you have. Shoot me a pm and we can link up via text. If you are not far from El Paso I would be willing to pick up. Tuscon, phoenix, Albuquerque etc.

Prefer a 1996 housing so make the swap straight forward.

I had a build thread on here but need one for drag racing that will take mild power. Have a CC503, locally set up aluminum heads, tri-y's, 4.10s, etc.

Or if someone can recommend someone close to me for a rebuild. Thanks in advance.

Add your location to your profile!

I have a friend from the Oldsmobile list that I've known for about 25 years. He's a hot rodder that's been around a while, plus he's a very smart fella, and knows his stuff.

He's located in Phoenix, and I can reach out to him and find out who he would recommend in that area if you are interested.

I'm 20 miles north of Austin, and the guy who started this forum, HACK/Scott Williams, has a buddy here he uses for transmission rebuilds, but I have no idea if he has a '96 core. I'm pretty sure he could rebuild to a high performance spec.

I bought my transmission from Mike (1FAST94) 2 years ago, but he's located in Ohio, not to close to where you listed.

Once again, fill out your user info, it'll help people recommend folks to you by location.

LMK if your interested in the Phoenix recommendation.

Phoenix works great. I can either bring the trans or bring the car. Not sure if Ill have a shop do the install or if Ill do it. Depends on my work schedule. Going to check with the shop that set up my rear end but I havent ever heard of any reputable performance tranny shops in the El Paso area.

I sent an information request to Autotech in Scottsdale as they have a 96 core in stock. Website says they do racing applications. Not many online reviews though.

Updated my location to El Paso.

Okay, here ya go. I trust my buddy's recommendation 100%. He's a hot rodder, and knows his stuff, so if he recommends them they've got to be top notch.

Hughes Racing Transmissions

They are excellent. He can take his car to them, and they will both build and R&R.

Do a ton of research before going with a builder. 4l60e's can handle some awesome power when built by the right builder, but there are TONS of builders that can't build them for poop.

You're not in the big leagues, power wise, but I would still go with a builder that the big dogs go with. If they can build transmissions for 800hp cars, you can be pretty confident they can build one for your needs. My advice would be search the LS1 tech boards where a lot of the big power guys talk about this stuff. There are only really a hand full of reputble 4l60e builders. Even some builders that put together great 80e's are known for botching 60e's.

A few of the big names in the game are

Cahall Performance Transmission

Probuilt

Performabuilt

Finish Line transmission

Rossler

But do your research first, things change relatively quickly in the automotive world and companies that did great work one year could end up slipping the next.

Be sure to pair it with a GOOD converter, Protorque, Circle D, Vigilante or at least have your old one professionally cleaned or risk it taking out your new trans and voiding any warranty.

I understand the desire to find someplace close by, but I would first look at some of the builders with great reputations and then try to find the closest to you rather than just picking a shop because it's close and advertises that they build 4l60e "race" transmissions or has a good reputation for building TH400's.

96 BBB Pro Touring- In the works- Mods list includes functional money incinerator, should have stuck to bolt-ons button, 100 dollars in mild steel MIG wire, a really expensive air compressor and a letter from Tire Rack saying nobody makes 335/35/17's anymore. (396/AI heads/D1SC)
