Mechanical Fan Clutch......??

I've been driving the '95 around lately (it was feeling unloved) and it seems the mechanical fan is "engaged" from startup until around 2-4 minutes of driving sounding almost like a flex fan.....and then it quiets down (thinking clutch is dis-engaging letting it free wheel)

My '94 which I've been driving for 4 years now never did this on startup - in fact, I cant ever remember hearing that fan sound noisy but it must come on as I've done some towing with it and the temps never get high

So.....which one is working correctly ??

I think this is wagon related as far as where this post goes as ALOT more of us LooongRoofs hare likely to have the mechanical fan - If not, feel free to move it Mr. Mods

Alan,
Mine did exactly that as well for the first block.
When the car was stone stock and I was in traffic on a scorcher the fan clutch locked up fully as well.

I don't know if the cold lock up is by design or more the silicone fluid settling from sitting.

Tons do it though, Gerry

Mine did it too. Drove me nuts. Right now the belt is off. I have the secondary fan programmed to act as a primary and so far so good. It barely keeps up in stop and go traffic on a 95 degree day. Temps never been over 190 though.

You can replace the noisy fan clutch with one from a '84 Buick Lesabre with standard cooling. NAPA part number is 271305. They sell one that is not silicone for a couple of bucks less but it will make noise.

Got this tip from RJI...and it worked well :D

I also did the NAPA fan clutch mod and am very happy with it. It probably gains back over 1/2 the horsepower lost with the mechanical fan (over dual electric fans) and only costs about $70.
