Posted a thread a while back about doing an LS or BBC swap in my wagon. Well Yesterday this happened. Old lady pulled right out in front me and she felt the full force of the early 90's GM full frame beast! Already talked to body shop insurance adjuster is coming out Monday but they've already told me its going to be totaled. Thinking about seeing if I can buy it back and repairing it myself and do ahead with the engine swap. What do you guys think? You think it would be worth it if I could get it back with the damage?...as you can see in the last pic it completed ripped the lower core support insulator right out of the frame. Really bummed out right now. Also messed up my back and apparently herniated a disc in my neck so that blows too.

Hey man- cars come and go, easily. I'm glad you're alright though, that's the important thing. Hopefully your body will heal without any lingering effects.

Not sure about the car. Obviously they'd total it, our cars are worth what now... 3k in good condition? I might buy it back and use it as a parts car for another wagon (If I were sure I wanted to go that route again and if it were cheap enough). If you planned on doing a swap- I'd just keep an eye out for another one with the engine you'd want in it. I'm guessing LT1?

EDIT: Never mind I see the LS swap. The panels look like they can be replaced but it's the frame I'd be worried about. If you planned on sinking time and money into it I would find another donor.

Don't be bummed man. Be glad you're ok. Things could've ended up so much worse.

Thanks man, Yeah I'm glad it wasn't worse, And I'm glad I my car impacted hers where it did, had I hit her in the drivers door she would be in the hospital no doubt. Your right its just a car, but man she was straight all she needed was a paint job. Problem is I know the insurance company probably wont give me but $1500 for it and what am I going to find to drive everyday thats been as reliable as this thing for $1500. I work for a Ford dealer and I actually do all the body shop ordering, and thats where the car is now. I'm going to have them check and see if the frame it bent, if it is then yeah i'll just let her go.

It's not terrible and, while cars do "come and go" these are mostly at the age they are going. Unless you want rid of it I'd certainly buy it back.

Also, apparently it is entirely her fault? Don't sign off on lowball offers from her insurance. They want these things off their books ASAP and they do have wiggle room. I've stuck more than 1 for a LOT more than their initial offer, just because they wanted my signature on that check. Their idea of "totalled" vs what they will actually pay is often up to what they can pressure you in to accepting fast.

^^^ This!

The insurance company is going to pay you for a comparable car. When mine got wrecked I ended up settling for almost double their initial offer. Took a lot of time, complaining and insistence in talking with managers but can be done. I was able to research their comps. and prove that they were not comparable to my car (Internet is a beautiful thing). IE, their comps are for 200K taxicabs with no collectors value. The point is that insurance companies are all about numbers and most of them really don’t care about the actual number, only that the number is consistent with what their software tells them. You can pick up our cars for a few hundred bucks up to $15k. Send them the ads for the $15K cars and explain to them how yours was closer in value those.

For the record and before the flaming – I’m well aware that the collectors value is minimal on these cars and that there are very nice 2/300k mile “Taxi cabs” out there but face it, most in that bucket are parts cars or used as toilet paper for some.

Good luck and glad you're ok.

This is true. Yes it was entirely her fault she pulled right out in front of me, there was a witness at the scene so I've got that going for me. Plus their insurance company has already excepted liability. What I expect the insurance company to offer and what I will except are two very different things. There's no way I could replace this car in the condition it was in for what I expect them to offer. I should find out early next week exactly what that initial offer will be.

Have around 92k on it. It was a local car here in Florida. Only thing the car really needed was paint on the hood and trunk. The body was straight with no rust. The interior is in great shape too, car was really taken care of. Everything worked. I think a car in that shape with that mileage is worth $2800.00. Try buying something decent to drive with low mileage, everything works, never let you down, for $2800. Few and far between.

Yea, actually they came right off the bat with a really great offer considering what these cars book for. It was WAY more than I expected so I took the money and ran. Unfortunately there weren't any decent wagons around and I had to replace the car asap. So I ended up buying a nice 98 GT Mustang for what I got for the wagon...not a bad deal. Even though I ended up with a Ford, an LS swap is planned :D
