Want to convert my Caprice LT1 to disc rear brakes... is there an affordable conversion kit out there? Or can somebody give me some GM part numbers so I can out it together? Tired a search, but it still must be broke.

You should look for an impala or 9c1(police) caprice of the 94-96 model years and take either the whole rear-end or just the disc brake setup(from backing plates & out) and swap them onto your 96 caprice.

I'd suggest taking the whole rear-end and swapping the disc brake one with your rear drum unit. Also you might need to get the driveshaft from the disc brake caprice as it might be a different length compared to the one you currently have.

That would be the easiest and most cost effective way to add rear disc brakes to a
caprice.

A LT1 car got the 8.5" axle which uis what the disc rears are so no DS concerns.

Beyond that are you aware the factory disc setup is actually far inferior to the drums in normal driving? The rears do almost nothing exept in HARD stops, so the guys with disc cars find themselves needing to mod the system to get the rear discs to actually more under normal conditions. Not saying don't do it just don't think it is an upgrade unless you further mod the system to make it actually function the way GM should have but did not make it work.
The primary problem is they used a drum proportioning valve, look in the "cheap" link in my sig for info on the "stealth bolt mod" which is how you need to mod things to make the discs actually function. Even after that though all you will have gained is the ability to say you have rear discs, the drums work wonderfully it is our front brakes that are a bit inadequate.

Guys I have a question pertaining to the rear discs.

How in the world does the parking brake work(besides pushing the pedal, lol)??

I only have the little drums on the face of the backing plate and the little knubby actuating rod on the other side, but no clue on how to make the parking brake useable.

Could you please help, as I need that working to pass the state inspection?

That's right bill the parts that are missing, and Yes I do know that I'm missing the parking brake cables, but I thought there were more to it than just those things.

I'll go read the links you provided

EDIT: I need the inner brake shoes, any part numbers on the whole inner setup?

Thanks alot Bill.

the shoes are also available in the aftermarket, ie. Raybestos, probably others.

contact me directly (e-mail) for options, as there are some things I can help you with

I just did this swap about 4 weeks ago. I used a rear from a 94 9C1, bought one new caliper(the other appeared to have just been replaced), two new axles, new eaton posi unit, and 3.73 gears.

Just a word of caution. What I thought was going to be a fairly cheap mod, used gear, new posi from ebay, etc, etc, turned into a $2K dollar project.

The latest High Performance Pontiac has an article on how to put discs on a 10 bolt, 8.5" rear end that came with drums by using parts from a '98-'02 S10-based SUV like the Envoy. The article used an early '70's GTO but any 10 bolt 8.5" rear is a candidate.
