Exhaust note difference on H-pipe/X-pipe

I'm getting kind of used to my exhaust sound on my car even though i absolutely LOVE it. Simple but for some reason i feel like i can do more becuase its so simple. Stock everything with exhaust cutouts placed right before my flowmaster 2-chamber mufflers. I know the mufflers dont really do anything anymore though but they're there. I was wondering what kind of change it would make if i put on an x pipe or an h-pipe. I would like the car to stay loud and deep, maybe just a little louder and deeper becuase i'm used to the sound

really? i heard that if you put an h-pipe on as a crossover, it should sound about as loud but just much deeper and more like an "old school" and if you put an x-pipe on, it should sound more "nascarish"

but i'm not sure. anyone else or is this pretty much how it is? if it is, then what are the benefits of having one?

I have a X pipe on my 442 and my Caprice. I love the sound, smooth, quiet, but the sound carries along way. My dad can hear me about 2 miles away from the house in either of my cars but at idle they are about as lound as a stock mufftang.

Jim and others with the X...which sound do you think is better?

I owned a mustang GT and a Cobra. I have about 20 years experience with mustangs and I can tell you that the H pipe produces a better sound. Its deeper and more "distinctive" mustang. I've had the Mac Pro Chamber H pipe and it sounded so sweet. The X pipes sounds higher pitch and quieter. It sounds good, but not as throaty and deep as the H pipe.

Here's a pic of the hi pipe I had

I've never had a H pipe but my friend had a H put in his Cutlass S and it made a small difference in sound. When had the exhaust done on my 442 and my cappy I went from stock duals, so I can't really compare a X to anything else.

I've had H-pipes on all my other cars. My roadmaster is the first with a X-pipe and I would never go back. It sounds much cooler and seems to feel better too. I've never noticed much of a difference in sound with a H-pipe but with the X-pipe you know somethings different. Mine has a strange howl when you rev up.

crossover pipes are used for balance. And I think, if I remember correctly, the H pipe is better for our cars, because the H pipe makes more torque and HP at a much lower RPM range, than the X pipe......right where our cars live.

And to answer your question, a crossover pipe will quiet down your exhaust note....so if all your after is a louder exhaust note, than delete your mufflers, or replace them with a louder set. Hope this helps.

I thought I had heard something like that too... I had also heard that the X pipe was better high up in the RPM range. But reacently I have read that the X pipe is actually better down low, but falls off up top in the RPM. Still others say the X pipe is just better at everything.

I tend to believe that the X pipe is a more efficient crossover, but the H pipe sounds better.
I have found that the best flowing and performing systems are not the best sounding.... Like the Borla is supposed to be one of the Best flowing systems.. but because it has those little 2 inch tail pipes and 2-1/4 intermediate pipes, it doesnt sound as good as a 2.5 inch system... it all depends.. there is alot to consider when it comes to sound.

The exhaust note with H-pipe is less bumby. It's more smooooth. Instead of Brooobooooboooom, it's Vroooooooooooooom!!!!

I'm not at all dissapointed that I got the H-pipe welded in. They say you get extra tourqe, but not enough to feel it.

OK here is what you have to remember different things sound different on different cars, and alot of people will respond to things they have read without actually verifying anything (this is not meant to flame anyone but just and observation)

I feel I have a valid input because I have had both an H pipe AND an X pipe on my caprice and can comment to the sounds and performance of both.

I noticed a Large boost in performance by switching to the X pipe, midrange torque is way better. The h pipe gave kind of a hollow boomy sound where as the x pipe sounds more "lean" it has more of a growl too it. Given the choice to do it again I would do the X pipe in a heartbeat. The only advantage to the H is that it is cheaper and easier to setup. BUt if you have a competent exhaust guy he can do a setup with custom pipes with an X for reasonably cheap.

I JUST got an H pipe installed on mine.. I have flowmasters... and I think it made it more quiet at idle and low rpms, but when you take off its loud, and it does carry ... my mechanic drove mine and I could hear him from a long ways away... the note is less boggy...the jury is still out whether i like it with or without the crossover...
