HOW DO I TELL IF MY CAR IS AN OFFICIAL IMPALA SS OR A CHEVY CAPRICE CONVERTED TO AN IMPALA AND IF I WAS RIPPED OFF ..

I KNOW FOR SURE IT IS REAL BUT I REMEMBER THERE WERE CODES ON THE TRUNK STICKER, AND OTHER TELL TALE SIGNS,

LIKE IMPALA SS EMBLEM BY RADIO, THE STEERING WHEEL SAYS SRS AIRBAG INSTEAD OF CAPRICE, BUT WHAT IS AN OFFICIAL TELL TALE SIGN, BECAUSE A MASTER CLONE ARTIST COULD DUPLICATE ALL THESE THINGS, THE VIN # ON CARFAX SAID CAPRICE AND SO DOES THE INSURANCE COMPANY BUT ALL THE IMPALAS I RAN FOR MY FRIENDS WHEN I HAD THE CARFAX ACCT. SAID CAPRICE.. SO WHATS UP??

I HAVE MANY PICS, ON MY YAHOO PAGE --

Check your under trunk lid sticker. It's or the left side. The RPO code for the SS is WX3. You could also make sure you do not see the 9C1 code. But a good forger could duplicate the GM sticker.
Some guys have access to list that list SS VIN numbers.

Well all SSs are a Caprice along with all 9C1s and the taxi (9U6)? models. A couple of SS options I haven't see (yet) in a clone is the Sungate windshield the Vats system and the block heater. All of these have options codes on the Spid sheet. Plus isn't the body mounting different on the SS? I doubt anyone would remove the 2 extra that the 9C1 came with. Do you have the original window sticker? It could be duplicated also but it's just one more reason to believe you have a "factory SS".

Careful about the body mounting bushings. It's true that the SS and the Caprice are missing the 3 front position lower frame bushings, 9C1's have those bushings from the factory, but a lot of SS owners are installing those missing bushings. The springs could also offer clues, Caprices, SS and 9C1 all have different springs. There's a write-up on those at b-body.net

Well i bought the car from a detective in area with 70k on it last year, and he said he got it somewhere around 20 25k with no records and from a dealership..

The trunk code doesn't have 9c1 and does have wx3 but I was wondering any other ways of telling.

Also, I have a wierd popping noise over bumps on the drivers side, is this the bushing thing? or a shock or what??

I hope nothing serious..
