how can i remove the limiter on my car? i think mines is set low because it seems like it starts to run out of breathe at 93 on up. highest i've gotten is 98. it's a 93 9c1, so i know sending it to brian@pcmforless is out of the question. anyone else got any idea's?

I don't know how fast the pre-lt1 cars are supposed to be, but that does seem a might slow. Have you done a tune up recently? I don't know where your speed limiter would be set, but you'd definatly know if you hit it. If you're looking for some computer work, you could go through someone like http://www.tbichips.com/ They specialize in TBI chips, and their prices seem very reasonable.

This topic has been covered numerous times, for TBI cars and L99/LT1 cars.

There are several different "limits" depending on the car, application, engine, and tires.

TBI limiters can be changed, but it would be dumb and $$$, IMO, to spend money on a chip reprogram for that alone. Modify the engine (exhaust, air cleaner, rockers, cam etc) and THEN it might makes sense to have the lmiter changed at the same time the new fuel tables are installed in the EPROM chip.

Do a search on "speed limiter".

well, i wasn't planning on doing any type of tuning until all the work gets done. i'm just curious on how fast i can really go. my buddies got a 93 and he said he's hit 130 but no farther cause he ran out of open space. right now speed isn't an issue at all, like i said i'm just curious. i already know not to expect a load of power and speed out of this motor, but it would be nice to just be able to stay on an lt1's @$$, although that takes some serious mod time and all.

this is strange. everyone else i know with a 9c1 doesn't have those limiters on their. me and my buddy got the same year car from the same department, same color and all, but his has no limiter. i feel cheated.

right now i wish i had my own ability to reprogram because i would do it and get rid of that foolish limiter. i think the limiters were a set-up by the ford guys to try and hold us down. haters

Without a limiter, and with a LO5 TBI whale copcar (9C1 version of the LO5, 1991-1993), you can reach 130-135 mph indicated in good air (cool or cold, no headwind, near sea level) and with an engine that's in good shape.

With the VZ2 limiter you probably won't exceed 130 mph which was the speed rating (H) of the factory tires (see door jamb sticker). Other speed limiters were used depending on the year, engine (LO3 or LO5), and of course whether it was the police 9C1 model, or a civvy model.

The LO5 9C1s can really go above 130 mph but you do need a long straight road (approx 5 miles from a standing stop, or 4+ miles from the highway speed) which is nearly as fast as a bone stock Impala SS with LT1 --- the difference is that the LT1 car accelerates much more quickly (0-60 mph in under 7 secs for the LT1 cars; more like mid 8s for the LO5 9C1 with 3.42) and the LT1 cars can go slightly faster (over 140 mph). The extra 55 hp of the LT1 only equates to 5 to 8 mph faster on the top end, because the aero drag force goes as speed^2, so the power requirement goes as speed^3.

This has been discussed, all of it, in more detail in earlier threads.

You will deffinately know when you hit a speed limiter, the car cut's out , then pick's up again after it slows some to below the limiter. It is very abrupt, It is not just a " run out of breath" feeling.
My '93 LO5 9C1 had no trouble topping 125mph.( Canadian digital speedo only goes to 199km/h).
I never hit a limiter in that car.
I'd suggest a good tune-up and check to make sure catalytic converter isn't holding it back.

Check the SPID for code VZ2.
Check the door jamb sticker for H rated tires.
Do a search -- all of this has been covered before.

I got my old '91 up to 105 or so once. Once you break 100mph or so, it takes all the L05's got to overpower wind resistance. Like others have said, there's something holding you back, the speed limiter would abruptly kick in, not do what you described. Check for a plugged cat, change plugs and wires, fuel filter, and retest. Also make sure your car still has the monster single exhaust and that it hasn't been replaced with wimpy, small 5.0 civvie exhaust.

Sounds like Philly's engine needs a bit of freshening up. My LT1 should pull at least what Michigan got out of it back in the day (142 MPH)or what one of the car mags got (I think Motortrend, but I just remember the article, not the source 147 MPH in a 9c1) with the 1.6 rr's and 3.73 gears putting me in the meatier part of the powerband up at that speed, but, to tell the truth, a 108 MPH limiter would not limit me (no pun intended) on the road as I never drive that fast. Nor do I have the need to do so. (I don't think I have to worry about my trap speed on the track being a problem quite yet either). Sure, I had Bryan remove my limiter, but as a practical matter, it makes no difference.

for that kind of cash I would just go see Byran @ pcmforless.com and get your PCM tuned for way less than the cost of that hypercrap unit and spend the leftover money on booze. You'll have a lot of booze to drink.

not to worry, i have something in the making for your untuned lt1. and being a driver means that when you do donuts, you don't mack out into other parked cars.

this is a stepping stone for bigger and better things. hopefully santa has my christmas list which should give me all kinds of goodies.

maybe you should make a list for him and ask for some heat and dent removal? a good tune up to get rid of that misfire wouldn't hurt either.
