Has anyone ever modified their turn signal lever? I know that might be a strange question, but I've always felt that it wasn't very smooth, kind of like I had to break the lever to initiate the turn signal....

I've always felt that way. It's 70's technology. :)
Whenever I turn, unless I'm in a long turning lane or something, I just hold it on without clicking it to try to prolong its life. So far, so good.

It's such a shame that the B-body didn't hold on for another 5 years or so because GM's
quality really improved from the mid-90's thru the early 2000's. Plus it would have gotten
some version of the LS1.

When the mechanism breaks, you just take off the steering wheel and replace the offending bits. Not a bad job for a Saturday afternoon.
