What's it mean when antifreeze is leaking out a head bolt?

Ummmm, there's a trail of antifreeze coming out the head bolt behind cylinder 8. It only leaks when running. What in the world could've caused that on a 3700 mile Golen?

Not enough thread sealer. Head bolts go into the water jackets.

You might be able to remove it and put some thread sealer on it and re-torque it. I'm not sure if that will screw with the sealing properties of the head... so I'd call Chad and/or wait for more experienced responses. Don't forget to drain same of the coolant from the block or else it will come out that bolt hole.

Maybe the IRS had something to do with it...? Hmmm...

If you have one, you may have more. The ones under the rocker covers , well you figure out where that coolant goes.

Was a cold retorque done after the engine was first run?
Someone is going to say "Non Retorquing Head Gaskets" but I still do it and see them move.
There is just too much going on and gaskets set, bolts relax, bolt under heads imprint cylinder heads.

What I would do is pull both knock sensors and drain the engine.

Next , one by one in torque sequence I would pull the bolts, spray brake clean down the holes, clean the bolts in thinners, coat the threads with Permatex thread sealer , install and retorque to spec.
But that's just me.

Dan, if your lucky it's just that one bolt. Pull it out, (let water spew out the hole...it won't hurt nutin....oh accept you have antifreeze so make sure to catch it). Then put ARP thread sealant on the bolt and put her back in...even if water is in the hole that sealant will seal perfectly.
A young kid named Nab turned me on to the ARP thread sealant. It's the only thing I'll use now.

You'll probably have to unbolt the headers to be able to get your socket on that bolt but that's life in the fast lane.

Then you can check your oil for water and hope that none of the head bolts under the valve covers are leaking. I bet they are not leaking...hope they are not. You'll be back on the road in a couple hours.

Ive had so many head studs, (not bolts), leak on me and it's not because I didn't goop em up with sealant. For some reason the permatex stuff just didn't work unless it was liberally applied.

Ask Chris Nickell about leaking head studs at the ISSCA Nats. I bet he had fun re-doing all of his in the hot parking area...but he used my tube of ARP sealant and no more leakers.

Thanks Karl, and everyone else. I just have a simple Japanese toolkit I won at work and probably can't do this myself. I also just have jackstands, not a nice lift to do this on. I also have some random oil leak in the bottom rear of the engine. There's oil all over where the header meets the exhaust on the passenger side. Then it is caked all the way back on that exhaust pipe. I don't know where it is coming from. I have a feeling this thing will be trailored to LA for investigation and I will have to buy a 90s Camry or something to get me around. I've rented cars the past two weeks to get by.

Sorry for the pity party. I just don't get why this stuff has to happen. First the radiator fan, then the MAF kept falling off, then a 1.6"RR polylock cracked off, then 4-5 of the other RRs were loose. Once that was fixed, it idled wierd while stopped at a light. It would idle really low and almost shut off... then speed up and shake the car! And now this. I know when you screw with stock engines, things go wrong... you have to go through a shakedown period. I just don't understand why all this is happening. Everything under that hood is new! It's got 3,700 miles and I have hardly driven the thing. I've taken off at some stoplights to show off about 3-4 times and sped up some freeway onramps a few times, but that's it. No racing 1/4s, no crazy burnouts all the time. Just a 1,900 mile trip back from Seattle to Phoenix and my 4.5 miles to work each day.

Anyway, thanks for the input guys.
