ok so for the most part i had always been told you change the oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles.... but i was browsing the caprice manual and near the back it had a list of what to do every X amount of miles as far as maintenance goes. near 30k miles it said change the oil every 12 months or (whatever the amount was) miles.

should i change the oil every 12 months like the manual says because its still at 30k miles, or stick to every 3 months because its a 15+ year old car?

I wouldn't do that. I changed my wagon's oil every 5000 miles or whenever the oil change light came on. My wagon had 275,000 miles on it whenethe bottom end finally let go. And I beat the hell out of that car.

How often do you drive it?

Back in the 60s and 70s, changing it twice a year or 5000 miles was the norm, and should be sufficient. The interval for mileage is determined by your driving conditions. I believe it says 3000 for heavy (dirty area, towing, stop and go) use, and up to 7500 for light use (highway, minimum stop and go). If it leaks/uses about 1 quart a month, you probably can get by with changing the filter every 6 months, and just adding oil.

hmm... it's my daily driver so I drive it every day. I don't travel too far though... usually within a 3 mile radius from my house. everything I need is within that distance thanks to livin in the city

You really need to drive it on longer trips. The engine should be up to temp (in closed loop) for at least 5 minutes, on a regular basis, to cook off volatiles in the oil, or the viscosity goes down. You are probably in the 3000 mile, or twice a year club.

If you use standard oil, "ole" for those south of the Mason Dixon (snicker snicker) I would change my oil 3,000 for short local trips (tough on the motor). If you use synthetic I would go 6,000 for the same conditions. I do mostly highway and I USE my LT1. I put Amsoil Signature Synthetic oil and do a filter change at 6,000, changing the oil at 12K.

Ditto Fred on this one^^^^
Where in Palm Beach are you at? You should start running it down to Tower Shops every once in awhile. Always nice to see another B-body enthusiast near by.

I have a little English sports car that I put about 1000 miles annually on. I do the oil once a year in it, as it's rarely driven.

On my B-bodies, the RMW, I do when the oil light comes on, which is usually about 5K, although sometimes, it'll come on again 1000-1500 miles later again. The oil is then dirty and I change it out again.

On my other not so well optioned cars (aka the 91 Olds), I do it about every every 3500-4000, or if it looks really dirty.

I have checked oil at 4K and had it still be translucent, so I might let it go a few more hundred, if I'm busy and don't have time to change it.

All depends on the type of driving you do.
