My 1996 Buick Roadmaster needs the hood release cable replaced, as it broke very close to the hood release pull handle. I want to ask if anyone has replaced their's and if so, what was the difficulty level? I'm toying with the idea of maybe just repairing it with splice.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd ask myself how many time I want to repair before eventually replacing the cable?

Not bad. It's pretty easy if you drop the DS inner fender out of the way. Which also sounds scary but isn't that hard either.

I have replaced them, and the worst part is getting the end out of the handle mechanism. Removing the mechanism from the A pillar makes it easier. There is a sheath end that must be pried from its mount on the mechanism. Then the wire end can be removed from the handle. It will require that you carefully bend the cable to get the cable out of the handle. On a 94-96 there is a clamp on the wheelhouse. It is not on the 91-93 wheelhouse. Once you remove the sheath from the hood latch bracket, feed it through the core support, and get it out from under the wheelhouse clip (94-96), you can work the firewall seal through the hole in the firewall from the outside with a screw driver. Installation starts with putting the cable with the seal through the firewall from the inside. A little lube makes it easier. You can then put the cable in the handle, and the sheath back in its bracket. Reattach the mechanism to the A pillar, and route the outer sheath the same way it was removed, attaching it to the bracket at the hood latch. Finally insert the end in the latch lever.

If possible just get the whole handle/mechanism bracket from the donor car and swap it all into from the dash panel to the hood latch. Much easier.
