has anyone ever relocated their window switches? If so any tips?

so I have been thinking about relocating my power window switches from the door panels into a custom-built center console kind of like the old Thunderbirds. I've been thinking about building custom door panels with custom on arm rests being a big guy my legs are costly pushing against the stock armrest and cracking the panel. Just wondering if anybody has ever done it and can give me some pointers, I would assume the biggest thing would be just having to extend the wires but I'm not sure if there's more involved.

I think Mike Fetcko from this forum may have already done this. Not sure...

If you are making a flat door panel from, say, aluminum, you could mount the switches on a higher/vertical panel on the new door interior. The seat switches could be mounted the same way. They could be mounted further front if your leg still hit them, or back with a shorter arm rest.

It has been done but I don't have details. The wires could be rerouted and extended. That is how they were for the Bonneville seat controls. My new 2011 Caprice has the switches all mounted in the console.

Just be sure to use the same gauge wires to extend them and solder and shrink tube all the connections, crimp connectors and scotchlox are bad news. The motor feed wires are probably 14 gauge and the power and switch ground should be 12, the FSM shows the sizes. It would be a lot easier if you use the same wire and tracer color wires as the ones you're extending, there are places online that sells it by the foot. You could also buy several different colors of plain colored wire and connect the like wires to each end to make it less confusing . Use convoluted tubing and/or harness tape to bundle and protect them. My grandfather had a T-Bird with the switches on the console, those were some of the coolest console designs ever. :)
