Is this a common place for the water pump to leak?

I got this water pump replaced by a shop about 150 miles ago. I was 90 miles out of town, 104 degrees, and no tools with me.

It smells like antifreeze when I drive it, and it may have lost a few ounces from the reservoir.

I put the front end on stands and crawled under. It appears that AF is leaking from the lower hose outlet, taking a ride on the balancer pulley, ending up on the spark plug wires, then getting blown back onto the cross member.

It is hard to tell from the first pic, but with a flashlight the joint between metal pipe and water pump appears to weep AF. The antifreeze is much more evident on shiny black plastic and dark metal, like near the spark plug wires.

Questions:
1. Is this a common point of failure, or should I keep looking for a different leak, unrelated to the water pump replacement?
2. Is it worth the risk of a catastrophic leak (and subsequent opti drenching) to drive 90 miles back to the shop to try again?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you are talking about the lower S shaped pressed in piece that goes to the heater core i had mine leak there... I could move it by hand i took it back to get a new one and that one was the same and i actually pulled it out of the water pump at the store. Sounds like you got a bad one.

if you don't have the time to fix this yourself, then i would first call the shop that replaced the pump and explain to them this still is not fixed. They could better advise you and maybe have you go to another shop or make arrangments to have them correct the issue. Whether it was a bad part or shoddy labor, they should fix it for N/C.

You'll probably be alright as long as it's not pissing huge amounts of coolant everywhere in a short amount of time. Just top it off and make a couple stops along the way to keep an eye on it. Watch the temp gauge like a hawk too (although I'm sure you would already be doing that knowing it has a leak). I wouldn't JB weld or seal it with anything if there is a chance the shop would give you a hard time about the warranty. Maybe call them and explain the situation and they might be okay with it.

Are there any brand markings, numbers, or stamps on the WP cover?

does your receipt note "warrenty"?. For example Mr Goodwrench" typically would have 12 month/12k mi on a repair.

Your WP is obviously defective and should be replaced $0

If the tube is not hand lose you should be fine driving the 90 miles back. I have not heard of a tube 'blowing out" but have seen various WP's leak from that point of connection

the shop will just get another wp from wherever they got this one so if it was a cheap rebuild than it will most likely be another cheap one

I get WP's from NAPA....lately as NAPA struggles to keep up with the big box store auto chains...I see crap from them also

WP replacement on a B-body is not that difficult so if you are skilled enough to work a wrench and follow a Haynes repair manual...may want to do this type of work yourself in the future. Given you paid for this at a shop, "they" should replace it

Edit: Beat me to it lol ^^^^

Also, if you are inclined to do it yourself, it's a fairly simple job. There is tons of info on this forum. If you can do basic maintenance on your car, you should be able to handle this job.

I have replaced the WP before, as a preventative measure at 100k miles. I did the opti at the same time. At the time, I didn't know how long the parts on these cars could last.

The temp gauge has never gone over normal through the first leaking water pump, or the current bad water pump. I will hook up my scan tool to make sure I get a correct reading.

I'm sure if I call and explain the issue Monday AM, the shop will offer to take it back in and replace the WP. If they used a $50 reman the 1st time, they would be nuts not to put the $100 new one on this time.

I could probably also take it apart and return the WP to the shop, and they would hand me an exchange. But I would still have to drive there to get the exchange. And that would let the shop off the hook.

I will clean up all the antifreeze mess, and run the motor to operating temp to make sure I am correct on the leak source. Then I'll call Monday AM to get an appointment for this coming week. Thanks for all the help.
